Description
13 Foot (3.95 m) Aluminum Utility Skiff Plans
The 13 Foot (3.95 m) Aluminum Utility Skiff is a compact, stable, and versatile welded aluminum boat designed for fishing, recreation, and general utility use. With a 69″ (1.75 m) beam, progressive V-bottom hull, and seven integrated storage lockers, this design provides a practical combination of stability, interior space, and everyday functionality.
The boat is designed for 10–40 HP outboard engines and can carry up to three persons. Its relatively deep interior, useful floor area, and substantial storage capacity make it well suited to fishing, day trips, and general-purpose boating.

Progressive V-Bottom Hull
The hull features a progressive deadrise that increases toward the bow. The deadrise is 9.5° at the stern, 12° at approximately 1.5 m (4′ 11″) from the stern, and 20.5° at approximately 3.0 m (9′ 10″) from the stern.
This hull geometry provides good stability at rest while the sharper forward sections help improve comfort and handling when running through chop.
Storage and Interior Layout
The boat includes seven integrated storage lockers, providing useful space for fishing equipment, safety gear, batteries, tools, ropes, and other onboard accessories.
The floor measures 65″ x 39 1/8″ (1650 x 994 mm), while the 25 9/16″ (65 cm) interior depth provides a practical and secure cockpit for up to three persons.
Aluminum Construction
Imperial Version
- Bottom, sides, and seats: 1/8″ aluminum
- Frames, stringers, and transom: 5/32″ aluminum
Metric Version
- Bottom, sides, and seats: 3 mm aluminum
- Frames, stringers, and transom: 4 mm aluminum
Construction Method
The boat is designed as a fully welded aluminum structure. The hull uses 4 mm frames, stringers, and transom components combined with 3 mm bottom, side, and seating panels.
This construction creates a strong and practical structure for a compact utility skiff. Accurate fitting, tack welding, dimensional checks, and a controlled welding sequence are recommended to maintain hull alignment and minimize heat distortion.
Difficulty Level
Difficulty level: Medium.
The project is suitable for DIY builders with basic to intermediate aluminum fabrication and welding experience. Previous professional boat-building experience is not required, but the builder should be comfortable cutting, fitting, and welding aluminum plate and structural components.
Power and Transom
The skiff is designed for a 20″ (508 mm) long-shaft outboard engine. The transom has a 12° inclination angle, and the recommended engine range is 10–40 HP.
This allows the boat to be fitted with a smaller motor for economical use or a more powerful outboard for heavier loads and stronger performance.
